CLASSICAL music is being piped into Mandela Gardens to deter 'troublesome' youths.

It is hoped the sort of youngsters who might cause trouble or damage will be put off by the sounds of Bach or Wagner.

Raychel Perks, spokesman for the Civic, which is playing the music, said it was intended to make the gardens a more attractive and pleasant place for everyone to visit.

Barnsley College students having lunch in Mandela Gardens yesterday liked the music.

Sheldon Ridley, 16, of Redbrook, said: "I don't think it will keep people away. I really like it. It's relaxing."

Asa Jones, also 16, said: "I love it. When they played the Lord of the Rings soundtrack the other day I was buzzing."

But another youth, who didn't give his name, said: "I hate it. I'll not be knocking about round here."
