HOUGHTON Main will turn their back on their own league in protest as they take to the field for the final of the National Village Knockout at Lord’s on Sunday against Timsbury. The Main men are the first Pontefract League side to reach the final of the competition but they will be wearing the colours of the South Yorkshire League, who they are joining next season, after feeling let down by their current league officials. The Pontefract League originally said they must play a league game against Hooton Pagnall tomorrow or lose the points. Houghton, who are top of the league and on course for the double, were hoping to rearrange the game so they could travel down to London on the Saturday and prepare for the big day. The Pontefract League have since done a u-turn and have announced the Main men can play tomorrow’s league game at the end of the season. But, after receiving no phone call or letter of congratulations from their own league following their semi-final success, Houghton, so disappointed at the lack of support from the Pontefract League, will be wearing South Yorkshire League ties. The whole affair has left a bad taste in the mouths of the Main players, who are now focussing on the biggest game of their lives. “It will be a weekend to remember,” said captain Ernie Heseltine. “We are travelling down on Saturday and staying overnight in the hotel opposite Lord’s. “We have a function with sponsors npower at the ground on Saturday evening and we also have a training session in the nets in the morning. “There is then going to be a photo-call before the game and win or lose, we will be heading back to the club house for a celebration. “But we are going there to win.”
