A tin of Heinz baked beans cost the equivalent of six pence when John and Doreen Rose opened The Bungalow Stores on February 1, 1970.

Some 40 years on and the price has somewhat increased. But the shop, on Rotherham Road, Athersley, has always been stocked from floor to ceiling with the community’s essentials.John and Doreen, who live in the back rooms of the bungalow, closed the shop on Tuesday – 40 years to the day since they took it over from another trader.

John and Doreen remember some of the good times - including delivering sacks of potatoes to the shop - on skateboards.
