Dozens of schoolchildren were told to obscure colours on their trainers with black permanent marker - or to go home.
Pupils as young as 11 were left roaming the streets after the crackdown by teachers at Kirk Balk secondary, Hoyland. There was no advance warning of the action.
Others, who learned pupils were being sent home for wearing 'inappropriate' footwear, jewellery and trousers, also decided not to bother going into school.
Headteacher Val Malcolm said she would not accept students flouting the school rules, but parents were angry their children were 'roaming the streets' without them being contacted to make sure somebody was home.
