The A and E department at Barnsley Hospital dealt with a new patient every four minutes on its busiest days in December.

 

Snow and ice led to an additional 500 people using the accident and emergency department compared to the same period the previous year.

 

The hospital tended to 6,336 in the emergency department during the month, its most ever. The large number led to an increase in the potentially deadly and highly contagious bacterial infection C-difficile, with 53 cases confirmed by January.
