Demolition of housing on Main Street, Goldthorpe, started has started as part of regeneration plans for the village.
The site was earmarked for a new primary school but government cuts mean the site will be left as open land. Some houses on the street have been boarded up for three years as Barnsley Council bought them from residents.
Janice Linsky, a Main Street resident who will remain living there, said it was sad to see the demolition go ahead when people only agreed to move out of their homes because they wanted a new school.
