A pupil from Royston who dyed her hair ‘purple’ has been told not to attend school – even though a member of staff has the same hair colour.

Jade Mills, 15, of Chevet View, dyed her hair last week and was sent to the ‘removal room’ at Carlton Community College. Her mum Donna went to the school, on Royston Lane, to collect her on Friday.

She said: “When I got up there, there was a teacher or receptionist with the same hair colour. I think the kids should have the same rules as teachers. If the kids aren’t allowed to have purple hair, then why are the teachers?”

Donna, who described the colour as ‘plum’, saw an assistant principal who told her the decision had been made by governors and the only hair colours allowed were red, blonde and brown.

But Donna said other pupils have sections of brightly coloured hair including blue and green. “He couldn’t answer my questions and kept shoving the governing body in my face. He said it affected their learning,” she said.

A school spokesman said the policy was clear - 'extremes of hair colour are not acceptable'.
