The National Union of Mineworkers is taking former leader Arthur Scargill to court over his £30,000-a-year London residence, the Chronicle can reveal.

Papers have been lodged at the Chancery Division of the High Court and were due to be served on him this week.

The union wants a judge to rule whether he is entitled to keep claiming expenses in excess of £30,000  a year for a three-bed flat in Barbican, London.
