THE family of a young man who died after being hit by a taxi have praised the friend who almost lost his own life trying to help him.

Daniel Corker and best mate Craig Johnson, both 23, were hit by the car on Saturday at 11.45pm after a night in Barnsley.

Daniel, of Noble Street, Hoyland, died soon after arriving at hospital. Craig suffered broken bones and internal disruption.

Witnesses said Craig, of Strafford Avenue, Elsecar, tried to pull Daniel out of the taxi's way after he had fallen into the road but both were hit. Craig was thrown on to the bonnet, Daniel was dragged under.

The car, a red Ford Mondeo, ended up in a garden after swerving into a wall.

In a statement Daniel's family praised his friend's actions. They said: “Daniel will be sadly missed. We see Craig Johnson as a very brave friend.”
