Pillars, maybe. Or, columns.

But architects made 'heap big' mistake when they decided to call these posts totems, according to students and shoppers.

The artificial stone pillars have been erected outside the entrance to the new Barnsley College building.

A piazza is being created in accordance to the plans drawn up by architects Jefferson Sheard. It will have planting beds, trees and seating - and a row of evenly-spaced 3.5m tall feature totems.

Regional director Phil Pollington said: "These totems are uplit to highlight and showcase them within the urban context of the town."

Art students Joely Dyson, 19, Emily Dryden, 18 and Sabba Ali, 22, were not convinced. "I think they're going to put statues there or put lights inside those gaps," said Sabba.

When told they were totems Joely said: "No. If they had faces carved in, maybe. They don't look bad, though."

Shopper Jenny Hutchins said she had not noticed them before. "I wouldn't describe them as totems. I don't think there's any point to them at all."
