RESIDENTS fear for their safety after the council told them to take their wheelie bins to the bottom of one of Elsecar’s steepest hills for emptying.

A number of Allott Street residents have said they are scared it could cause injury. There are concerns for the elderly and weak, and there are fears about managing in wet and icy conditions.

Barbara Mallender, 73, said: “Everyone's been up in arms. We are paying for a service that's not being provided. This is downright dangerous.”

The council introduced the system because its new self-levelling lorries cannot cope with steep inclines. They offered excemptions to residents older than 80, and anyone who has a disability. But several residents are in their 70s.
