Bacon and sausages will be replaced by porridge and toast on a new breakfast menu at Barnsley Hospital.
Traditional cooked breakfasts have gone and healthier options including cereal, fruit, toast and jam are now on offer.
The new menu started on Monday following a review by the trust's team of dieticians and catering staff. Many cooked breakfasts were going to waste with a fifth returned untouched during a two week period in July.
Surgery matron Debby Horbury said the alternatives were popular before the switch.
"The most popular breakfast choices for our patients are porridge and cereal, so the new menu will mean little change for them," she said.
"More importantly patients we identify as needing further nutritional support by the dietetic team will continue to receive the additional breakfast items and will be unaffected by the menu changes."
Bernie Baxter, head of hospital catering, said it would save money, reduce waste and be healthier.
"The changes we are making are not revolutionary, in fact we were the only NHS hospital trust in South Yorkshire still offering three hot meals a day to patients which is why we were experiencing high levels of waste."
