DEREK Powers is still a high roller...
Even at 85 he keeps on pedalling and last Sunday he did a mile for every year of his life at the Cancer Research UK Etape Caledonia race in the Scottish Highlands.
If that does not sound difficult enough, he did it despite only being able to pedal with one leg being the oldest ever participant.
He had the support of his 60-year-old son Russell in the race.
Derek has suffered with arthritis for two decades and now relies on just his right leg as his left offers minimal movement and he typically walks with a crutch.
But there is no stopping him once he saddles up on his e-bike.
Derek said: “I had to give up climbing Munros (Scottish mountains) when my arthritis worsened but I could still pedal, so I started cycling more and more.
“In the last ten years, I’ve cycled more than I ever have in my life.
“Cycling keeps me going.”
The retired nursery owner, former teacher and colliery worker has earned the plaudits of the event director, Jo Dytch.
Jo said: “Derek’s story is genuinely inspirational.
“His grit, humility and passion for cycling embodies everything Cancer Research UK Etape Caledonia is about, pushing your limits and celebrating the joy of riding in one of the UK’s most breathtaking locations.”
