YOUNG Joshua Kavanagh has wowed more than 1,500 theatre-goers following his performance as Charlie Bucket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at Wakefield Theatre Royal.

Performing with the acclaimed Wakefield West Ridings Theatre Company under the direction of Dee Bennie-Marshall and musical director James Greatorex, the ten-year-old Barugh Green Primary School pupil stepped into the spotlight across three packed performances that earned standing ovations and glowing praise from audience members, many of whom described him as ‘a star of the future’.

Since securing the role in March, Joshua has worked with tireless dedication, learning a full script of dialogue and solo songs - all while balancing schoolwork and preparing for his SATs, which he completed just one week before opening night.

Joshua’s journey to the spotlight began much closer to home.

Born and raised in Barnsley, he has trained with JL Dance Company, whose coaching and encouragement helped lay vital role in preparing him for such a demanding part.

He said: “This has been the most amazing experience of my life.

“I’ve been with JLDC and Barnsley Youth Choir since I was four and I would love to be on stage when I grow up.

“When I found out I got the part of Charlie I couldn’t believe it.

“I was really nervous because I’ve been in lots of shows but never had to learn so many lines and be the lead role.

“The rest of the cast were all adults and I felt scared at the first rehearsal but everyone was so kind and gave me lots of helpful advice.

“Lots of my family, friends and teachers from Barugh Green Primary School and Hope House Church came to watch which was amazing.

“I even got to sign autographs after the show at the stage door.

“I’m really sad it’s all over now but I can’t wait to get back on the stage again soon.

“I’ve loved every minute of being Charlie Bucket, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”
