An 'immovable' block is sitting in the middle of Kendray Street in Barnsley - attracting a lot of attention.
It appeared over the weekend and has left shoppers and workers baffled.
Staff in Charlesworth's pork butchers thought it was put there by the council to stop traffic using the road.
"It's caused a bit of intrigue," said Christine Chamberlain. "It must have been Sunday when it appeared,"
Colleague Carol Gavin said: "People have been climbing on top and having photos, or walking past and tapping it."
Andrew 'Fred' Jackson, runs Munjack's Thai cafe with his wife Mun. He said: "It's got people talking. There have been two lasses trying to shove it for the last half hour."
Shopper Steven Aranyi, 78, of Elm Court, Worsbrough Bridge said he was baffled by the block, which has the word immovable embossed on one side.
"It might take some figuring out," he said. "It could be one of those things they put on show to guess what it is. With the Olympics and the Queen's diamond jubilee and European football, you never know."
The Chronicle can reveal it is part of an art project by Mind the Gap an theatre group for actors with learning disabilities.
The six foot cube is being watched by a camera which is streaming footage live on the internet at www.mind-the-gap-org.uk.
A message on the website says: "It appears immovable. Can you help?
"How would you move the immovable? Maybe though, you don’t want to move it; you want to disguise it, play on it or make it disappear.
"We want your ideas, pictures, photos or videos."
