A CHURCH has carried out important work on its car park and roof - with support from a National Lottery grant.

St Helen’s Church, in Athersley, serves the community every day through the use of its hall and the work will ensure that it remains able to do so.

Father Peter Needham said: The grant we received is for the community more than the church, but the car park is used every day for people who use our hall.

“The roof hasn’t been properly dealt with before either, it’s been tinkered with, but without the attention it ran the risk of becoming a big problem.

“We’ve added some money ourselves, but the grant has really helped out, and to get that help is enormous.”

The work that was carried out included replacing some inner materials in the roof that had began to rot.

Father Needham added: “Some of the underlying roof materials had rotted considerably, and had we not dealt with this it could have become a major problem.

“Some missing and broken roof tiles were replaced as well, the firm did a superb job.

“Our church hall is a big contributor to the social life around here, it is used every day of the week.

“Without a decent car park people won’t come, so it is important that we have its upkeep right.”
