Barnsley Council is being 'held to ransom' over a patch of land, effectively stopping work on Burton Road bypass, the Chronicle understands.
The roadworks, for the new link road between Old Mill Lane and Burton Road, were due to be completed by April.
But work on the ambitiously entitled 'quality bus corridor' has been halted amid a dispute between the council and the Wickes site landowners, global investment company Aberdeen Asset Management.
It is believed the company has turned down an offer from the council to buy land on the corner of Burton and Wakefield Road, needed for a slip road to the bypass.
Former Councillor Bill Gaunt describes the situation as embarrassing in this week's paper.
But Coun Roy Miller said it was a complex situation.
