Anthony Dutton, of Barlborough Road, is up for Emergency Services Worker at the ceremony in November, hosted by Barnsley-born actor and TV star Shaun Dooley.

The 72-year-old has been nominated by his daughter Alison Paterson, of Washington Avenue, Wombwell, because he has been a community first responder for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service since 2005.

"His role is to answer 999 calls passed to him by the controller and to be with the patient as quickly as possible to give vital minutes to them before the full emergency crews arrive," said Alison.

"My father will have completed well over 500 responses and last year won the Yorkshire Ambulance award for his work in the community."

He goes out to speak to groups regarding his role, making the effort to tell them that after dialling 999 they could see a private car outside and man with a high-visibility vest and big bag coming up the path to the house, and stresses that he is here to help.

"My father also works closely with the Wombwell High Street committee and the galas, covering first aid at all these events."

Anthony was shocked at the nomination and joked: "They keep doing these things to me."I help out in the community and there are quite a lot of people worse off than me in respect of health.

"My job is to try and beat the ambulance service to the scene and reassure the patient and the family.

"If it's something like a cardiac arrest, I've got equipment to restart the heart and oxygen, things like that.

"I'm just there to give two or three minutes of my time which can make a real difference between life and death.

"I did get an award from ambulance service for my community involvement and first responding, and it'd be nice to have the Proud of Barnsley award to go with it."
