He might not be the likeliest of athletes but landlord Mick Taylor was thrilled to get his hand on an Olympic torch when it came to Darton.

It was brought to the village by torch relay sponsors Coca-Cola, which took the torch from the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin to the Spar shop, Churchfield Lane, and the Rose and Crown pub, Barnsley Road. It is part of Coca-Cola's countdown to the games and is one of eight torches from previous Olympics being used to publicise the London 2012 games.

To tie in with the visit Spar staff decided to team up with the Rose and Crown workers to hold a mini-Olympic games and raise money for charity.

They held cycling and rowing challenges for two charities. Other attractions included stocks and sponge throwing.

Mick, 61, is landlord of the Rose and Crown. He did his bit on the day with three sets of 11 minutes on an exercise bike and a stint in the stocks. Bar manager Annmarie Rooney said it was a fantastic day. "We raised more than £2,300," she said.

The proceeds have been donated to Macmillan and Yorkshire Air Ambulance in memory of Darton 'legend' Paul McGrath who died on March 23 after his motorbike was in collision with a car. He was treated by air ambulance staff.
