IAN Graham is the definition of a community hero and despite being partially blind it doesn’t stop him helping out where he can.
The 67-year-old will be known to many across the Worsbrough Common community and beyond for his litter picking.
He’s out and about in the area almost every day doing what he can - and the council say the work he does is influential to keeping the area clean.
And despite being blind in his right eye and partially-sighted in his left, he’s never one to shy away from a challenge.
Craig Aubrey, the community development officer for Stairfoot, told the Chronicle: “He does loads of litter picks but he likes to call it paper picking.
“He does it eery day.
“He even went out on his birthday to help out.
“Ian comes to visit me every day in Worsbrough Common to discuss the area and what can be done.
“He probably picks about 20 bags of litter a week so that’s around 1,000 bag a year which is amazing.
“He reports fly-tipping, helps us out with weeding - he’s such a big help.”
Ian completed a sponsored run for a local lady who has been diagnosed with cancer on Thursday and raised hundreds of pounds in the process.
And he’s been nominated in this year’s Community Hero category at this year’s Proud of Barnsley awards - and Craig says it’s nothing less than he deserves.
“He’s brilliant,” he said.
“I work with a lot of volunteers in my role and I’m always seeing Ian.
“He’s such a big help and he really invests a lot of time into the area.
“He’s blind in his right eye and partially-sighted in his left but that’s never stopped him.
“He’s got so much confidence from doing this.
“Ian’s always out and about and his carers are brilliant as well.
“He’s just amazing.”
