TWO SISTERS from Wath are due to compete in an international golf tournament.
Jessie Lane, 13, and her younger sister Poppy, 11, are set to take part in the Champion of Champions World Golf Junior Championships in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland from July 29-31.
The Wath Academy pupils have qualified after they both won the ‘order of merit’ during the season-long Ping Tour featuring tournaments around the UK.
Their dad John said: “They both started playing when they were five.
“I played golf, but quite poorly. I took them down to the driving range and they started from there.
“When Jessie was about seven, the pro at our club Waterfront Golf came to get me and she was whacking the ball miles. Poppy has followed her example.
“They both play for Yorkshire.
“It’s a big thing for them to qualify for the Champion of Champions, even though it is quite expensive for us to go as a family.
“They will be up against golfers from about 40 countries, including places like Japan and Australia.
“They are definitely hoping to make careers out of golf.
“Jessie is already talking about going to America when she’s older, because she plays against much older girls who are about to do that.”
