A BMX-mad five-year-old came 21st in the world championships despite being the youngest in his category.

Arthur Herrington, of Kingfisher Drive, Wombwell, competed against 100 other young cyclists, aged five and six, at the International Cycling Union championships in Birmingham at the end of May.

He reached the quarter finals of the four-day event but was eliminated after a crash. Mum Natasha Bonser, 25, said she and dad Arthur, 29, were very proud and were making a start on raising the £4,000 they need to take him to next year’s championships in New Zealand.

She said: “He’s only five so it’s quite an achievement – he was way ahead of a lot of kids older than him so we want to thank everyone who sponsored him this year. But he has a much better chance next year because he’ll be one of the oldest.”

Natasha and her partner moved from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, eight years ago after members of her family – originally from England – decided to move back.

They settled in Hemingfield but moved to Kingfisher Drive at the end of 2009 and played a part in setting up the nearby BMX track.D
