BARNSLEY North MP Dan Jarvis has signed a new border security agreement with Iraq’s Deputy Foreign Minister.

This agreement will make it easier and quicker for the UK government to return Iraqi immigrants with no legal right to be here, and it will act as a deterrent to those considering illegally entering the UK on small boats.

The agreement supports the government’s wider commitment to restore order to the asylum system and formally recognises the government of Iraq’s significant work to provide reintegration support to those returned.

Dan Jarvis, who is also the Security Minister, said: “As someone who served in Iraq, I know how firsthand the importance of building strong, long-lasting relationships in the region - and that’s precisely what our new agreement achieves.

“It will allow us to remove Iraqi nationals with no right to be here more swiftly and will work alongside many other measures - such as our new returns agreement with France - to deter the small boat crossings.

“Yes, we have much more to do.

“But we are making progress and we’ll continue to work round the clock to deliver change.”
