A BARNSLEY Hospital porter has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award for the second year running in recognition of his ‘heartfelt desire to give back to the community and improve lives’.
Luke Callaghan, 30, from Brierley, has taken part in numerous fundraising activities to raise money for Barnsley Hospital Charity and has raised over £4,000.
Luke said: “Working at the hospital I see what a big difference the charity makes to patients and I love to do my bit to help.”
The charity has nominated Luke in the Hospital Hero category with the nomination paying tribute to his contribution: “We are proud to nominate Luke as a true Hospital Hero for his unwavering dedication and inspiring fundraising efforts on behalf of Barnsley Hospital Charity over the past two years.
“Luke has consistently pushed himself out of his comfort zone to support patients and causes close to his heart — and to rally others around him to do the same.
“Despite not having run since his school days, Luke laced up his trainers to take on the Barnsley 10K, proving that determination can overcome any obstacle. But this was just the latest in a long line of challenges. Luke has completed two skydives, a shark dive, a LEGO walk, and even a wing walk, all in support of vital services at Barnsley Hospital. Each challenge has reflected his personal courage, creativity, and deep commitment to making a difference.
“Beyond the physical challenges, Luke is a powerful advocate for all patients. He has been a dedicated supporter of the Make a Memory Appeal, helping to enhance the hospital experience for patients living with dementia, and has also raised funds for the Breast Care Appeal, showing his compassion for individuals and families affected by cancer.
“Luke’s efforts are driven not by recognition but by a heartfelt desire to give back to the community and improve lives. His fundraising journey is as inspiring as it is impactful — and he continues to motivate others to join him in supporting the hospital. Luke has raised over £4,000
“His bravery, selflessness, and tireless commitment make him a true Hospital Hero.”
Luke added: “I’m really pleased and proud o be nominated again but doing all the fundraisers has been amazing but I couldn’t have raised the money without the amazing help from the community I have had loads of support which I really appreciate.”
