A HISTORIC church which is believed to date back more than 1,000 years has become the subject of an urgent fundraising appeal to replace its roof.

St John’s Church, a cherished heritage building at the heart of Penistone, needs to raise another £75,000 to fund an all-new canopy after a temporary measure failed.

Seventeen years ago, the church faced a significant setback when the lead from its roof was stolen.

In an effort to protect the building, felt was installed as a temporary measure.

However, the felt has not held out against the elements, leading to water ingress that now threatens its structural integrity.

Reverend David Hopkin, oversight minister at St John’s, added: “The church has stood as a beacon of hope and unity in Penistone for many years.

“The support we have received so far has been incredible and I am confident that, together, we can overcome this challenge.

“This roof is not just about preserving a building, it’s about safeguarding a place where our community comes together in times of joy and sorrow.

“I urge everyone to contribute in any way they can to help us reach our goal.

“This appeal is crucial to preserving the fabric of the building, which has been a cornerstone of our community for generations.”

The Grade I-listed building does not receive funding from the Church of England, making the community’s support even more vital.

Thanks to the generosity of grants and local fundraising events, the church has already raised £100,000 but with post-pandemic construction costs escalating, an extra £75,000 has been estimated in order to fund a full replacement.

Its windows also contain a large amount of stained glass, much of it many hundreds of years old.

Some newer panes have been installed, most notably in 1992, to celebrate the 600th anniversary of Penistone Grammar School.

Councillor Hannah Kitching, the Mayor of Penistone, added her support.

She said: “St John’s Church is an integral part of our town’s heritage and community spirit.

“The efforts to restore and preserve this building are commendable, and I encourage everyone to support this vital cause.

“Together, we can ensure that St John’s continues to serve as a place of solace, celebration, and community for generations to come.

“The race is on to secure its future.

“We call upon the community and supporters far and wide to help us achieve this goal.

“Every contribution, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to ensuring that St John’s continues to be a place of worship, community and heritage for years to come.”
