THURNSCOE Reservoir Community Pond’s commitment to helping local youngsters has bagged them a Proud of Barnsley nomination.

Leaseholders Warren Rodgers and Carol Blakemore, alongside bailiff Megan Rodgers, are a family team who have transformed the pond into a safe space for young people in Barnsley.

From what started as a simple Facebook post, the group has created a welcoming environment where children can learn about and explore the outdoors.

Free equipment is provided so everyone, regardless of their background, can get stuck in with fishing.

So far, 65 children have been provided with free fishing tackle.

Megan said: “My dad has always done it but has never been one for social media.

“I advertised on Facebook because a kid needed something from me, but I didn’t have it.

“Everyone started dropping fishing tackle off and we set up a fishing tackle bank.”

Young people are given the chance to get involved with their community, with volunteering opportunities offered, allowing them to build skills and responsibility.

The group doesn’t just offer fishing but a range of exciting events designed to engage and entertain the community.

Last year, the group threw a spooky Halloween disco.

To spread the Christmas spirit, they later hosted a Santa’s grotto, which saw lucky locals getting gifts.

The group also works with the Springwell Learning Community, offering groups of children the chance to engage with nature.

Nominator Darryl Hand, community development officer for the Dearne, said: “Thurnscoe Reservoir Community Ponds are making a real difference to children’s lives - giving them fun, friendship and a future.

“They are true children’s champions and a shining example of what makes Barnsley proud.”

The growing number of youngsters getting involved has created a community based on growth and generosity.

Megan added: “If one kid hasn’t got tackle, another kid will give it to them.

“We’ve got what we call a ‘trust hut’ in the back garden with shared equipment.

“We have a breakfast club, which we don’t charge for.

“It keeps kids off the streets.

“We had one kid who was nicking cars and smoking vapes.

“Now he’s at that pond every day, he helps us out and does all sorts.”
