BARNSLEY Women’s FC ‘sent a message out’ to their National League Division One North rivals with a 2-0 victory at previously unbeaten Leafield Athletic on Sunday.

Leafield had won all of their league games but Helen Lynskey opened the scoring in the fifth minute then Jemima Jarvis secured the win from outside the box late on.

Barnsley have nine points from four games which leaves them third ahead of a home match with Kidderminster Harriers on Sunday.

Manager Craige Richardson said: “I am pleased. I knew if we turned up, we would get a result. I think that sends a message out to the rest of the league.

“We know Leafield will be up there this season but I think we could have scored four or five.

“We had some really good chances.

“There were some outstanding performances. We know the teams we play in the next couple of weeks are the ones who haven’t performed yet and we don’t want to be the ones they turn over.”

Meanwhile, Lucy Tindle scored five goals as Wombwell Town won 7-1 at home to Sheffield Medics in Division Four of the Sheffield and Hallamshire League. Bethany Goldthorpe and Ellisha Jones also netted.
