Andrew and David Cole were made redundant in 1993 and pooled their savings to open Cole Bros Café at Wombwell top market in February 1995.

Two years later, they moved the café to Wombwell High Street but noticed there was nothing special to attract customers to the town.

By 2004 they had formed the Wombwell High Street Committee, which started with 16 members among the businesses on the street and now totals 40.

Working alongside business owners, the council and the town's three councillors, the brothers have hung 75 flower baskets and organised annual summer and Christmas galas, complete with 40 lamp post and 50 shop lights for the festive season.

In eight years they have gathered £123,400 for the street through fund-raising and securing council grants. David is now the treasurer of the Wombwell Community Board while Andrew is a member of the Dearne South board.

Nominee Derek Myers, of Grantley Close, Wombwell, said: "Wombwell again has become more popular for shoppers, including people from other areas. It is a more pleasant place to shop. This is down to the hard work and unselfish dedication of Andrew and David Cole, along with their loyal staff, who commit on a daily basis for the benefit of the community."
