BARNSLEY will bid farewell to one of its most famous sons - Harold ‘Dickie’ Bird OBE - at his funeral next Sunday.

Dickie, one of cricket’s most beloved figures, died on September 22 aged 92./

His funeral will take place at 2pm St Mary’s Church in the town centre, followed by a private family-only cremation at Barnsley Crematorium.

It was Dickie’s wish for the funeral to be held on a weekend so that those who did wish to attend could do so.

Barnsley Council is supporting by co-ordinating a temporary road closure of St Mary’s Gate outside St Mary’s Church, which will be in place all day.

There will also be a very brief road closure on Church Lane for a few minutes at about 1.45pm to allow the funeral procession to pause for a brief moment of reflection in front of Dickie’s statue on the way to church.
