A SENIOR mammographer at Barnsley Hospital has been praised for her fundraising for the hospital charity’s Breast Care Appeal.

Stephanie Ellis-Smith, who works in the hospital’s breast care unit, completed the Barnsley 10k in 2024 and 2025, is part of the Breast Care Dragon Boat Race Team, and has also signed up for a charity skydive.

The skydive was postponed multiple times due to weather and scheduling and this will be Stephanie’s eighth attempt.

She has been a supporter of the hospital charity since 2024, but her connection to the unit goes back further.

The appeal holds a very special place in her heart, as she has worked as part of the Breast Unit team since October 2023.

At both the hospital and the Community Diagnostic Centre in the Glass Works, Stephanie plays a key role in delivering care to a wide range of patients, from women referred on a two-week cancer pathway by their GP, to those attending annual check-ups or post-treatment, and patients with a family history of breast cancer.

The team supports both women and men a reminder that breast cancer can affect people of any age and gender, despite common misconceptions.

Stephanie assists with procedures such as biopsies and ultrasound scans, offering chaperone support and helping guide patients through what can be a very emotional and uncertain time.

“What I love most about my role is hearing people’s stories and connecting with them - they’re absolutely fascinating and a poignant reminder of the importance of our work. And I work with such a fantastic team,” Stephanie said.

“We’re a small group of eight staff, but we know each other’s strengths and always lift each other up.”

Stephanie has also been actively raising funds with her homemade flapjacks having raised over £900 for the appeal.

These were sold in the Volunteers’ Coffee Shop at Barnsley Hospital and went down a treat with visitors and staff.

Sales were boosted with help from volunteer colleagues Janet Curry and Tracey Taylor.

“We’re so grateful to Stephanie not only for her professional care and compassion every day, but for the energy, heart, and creativity she brings to our fundraising efforts,” said Jane Mills, charity development manager.
