BARNSLEY academy player Josh Kenchington has been sold to Premier League giants Newcastle United.

The defender, 15, is from Barnsley and spent time at Junior Tykes and in the Barnsley Schools teams before joining the Reds, who he supported, and turning down an offer from Sheffield United.

He was called into the England under 15s squad last season.

Kenchington is the latest highly-rated youngster to leave the club after fellow defender Oliver Wilkinson turned down a scholarship offer in the summer.

Wilkinson, the England under 16s captain, became the youngest player to ever start a game for the Reds last year when he played against Manchester United under 21s in the EFL Trophy.

It has been reported today that Wilkinson has joined Championship club Ipswich Town.

Barnsley will receive a fee for each of them but it is not clear yet how much. The Kenchington fee has been reported at £350,000.
