POLICE are appealing for information after fireworks were reportedly fired towards children in Mapplewell Park last week.

Two teenagers were injured in the attack which reportedly took place last Thursday.

Coun Steve Hunt, who represents the ward, has called on locals to submit any information they have to the police.

He said: “Last Thursday a 15-year-old boy who was playing football with friends was injured by a firework that was thrown into the MUGA.

“The boy suffered injuries to his face and was treated at Barnsley Hospital A and E.

“He has a perforated ear drum and hearing loss.

“This incident is extremely serious and completely unacceptable.

“We have contacted South Yorkshire Police and Barnsley Council safer neighbourhoods to express our concerns.

“Both have replied to us and are taking the appropriate actions to try and identify those responsible.

“The park CCTV footage has been reviewed already but unfortunately the darkness and the clothing worn by the perpetrators makes it impossible to identify them.

“We are therefore appealing for information from this community to try and identify those responsible.”
