A CAFE in the heart of the Cudworth will honour local veterans.
Drummond’s Cafe, situated on Pontefract Road, has geared up for Remembrance commemorations.
Not only does the cafe have a striking Remembrance artwork window - owners and life partners Brian Drummond and Sandra Hall are set on providing veterans with a safe and welcoming space.
After taking the cafe on in 2020, they have become a beloved fixture in the community.
They are set to offer veterans special service and discounts from November 6, until November 12.
Brian also works voluntarily for SSAFA (Soldiers’, Sailors’ and Airmen’s Families Association), providing support to local veterans.
Through his selfless venture, Brian met the Mayor of Barnsley, who will pay a visit to the cafe on Thursday, November 6 - for one of their signature sandwiches and a hot drink.
During his visit, the Mayor will pay his respects to a small group of veterans, whilst listening to their stories.
The cause is close to Brian’s heart, being an ex-Infantry Soldier, who fought was on the front lines, with 25 years of service.
He stressed the importance of welcoming veterans in the community and giving them a supportive social space.
He explained that Remembrance Day may resurface difficult and complex feelings for veterans, especially for those with no support system.
He said: “When veterans come to the cafe they get special treatment around Remembrance time.
“It’s brilliant having a hub for veterans, so they can come to the cafe and talk veteran stuff and I can look after them.
“We prioritise this because it helps take care of people.
Sandra said: “It means that we’re giving something back into the community, which is lovely.
“There are lots of veterans in Cudworth and they are always, always welcome.
“It’s very special to Brian, being ex-military, so it’s nice that we do it.”
