THE business case which is set to transform local rail travel on a ‘crucial’ trans-Pennine line blighted by capacity constraints is being readied ahead of its release.

The Penistone Line, which starts at Barnsley Interchange and makes its way through Dodworth, Silkstone Common and Penistone stations on its way to Huddersfield, is the subject of a bid which aims to boost passengers’ experiences.

Increased train speeds and the doubling of its current single-track layout could enable two trains per hour, in both directions.

Currently, only one train per hour runs and the average journey time is about an hour and 15 minutes from end to end.

Rail consultancy firm, SLC, was appointed to develop the final case.

Director Sam Uren said: “Connectivity is a key driver for growth and the Penistone Line has the potential to serve its region better through a series of targeted improvements.

“We’re looking forward to working with partners to develop the case for how these initiatives can be realised for the people of Yorkshire.”

The Labour government confirmed £48m funding for the upgrade scheme in the autumn budget last year and Marie Tidball, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, hosted an event in Parliament recently with Colne Valley MP Paul Davies to discuss what is next.

She added: “I listen to constituents across our communities who tell me how important the Penistone Line is to reaching work, education, and healthcare and to see family and friends.

“The services are currently unreliable, overcrowded and overstretched.

“It was clear how important this project is to improve connectivity right across South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.

“I’ll be continuing to work closely with government and local colleagues to ensure this project delivers the urgent improvements our communities deserve.”
