A BARNSLEY man is hoping his great grandad - who received the Distinguished Conduct Medal - will be remembered for everything he did during the war.

Alfred Brown worked at Hickleton Pit and signed up to fight in the war in 1915.

He was a part of the York and Lancaster Barnsley Pals and was posted to the Mediterranean before he was sent out to fight in France.

He received the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for his bravery and his great grandson, Harry Brown, is hoping that he will be remembered fondly for the sacrifices he made during the war.

An article from the London Gazette at the time states: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty and consistent good service at all times.

“He has always volunteered for any dangerous patrol work, and his courage and coolness have invariably inspired confidence in his men, especially in recruits on patrol for the first time.”

Harry said: “He was on the front line and his role was to blow the German trenches up.

“His role was a bomber expert.

“He was wounded in action numerous times but patched up and sent back on to the front line.

“He won the DCM medal for distinguished conduct in the field.

“He was one of the lucky ones who managed to survive the Great War.”
