Kelechi Nwakali scored from the halfway line as Barnsley under 21s won 2-0 at Hull City under 21s on Tuesday.
The opening goal arrived on 80 minutes when Stanley Holder – who had earlier missed a huge chance – latched onto a long ball and put Feyi Afuape clean through to provide a calm finish.
Nigerian international Nwakali, who has not been involved with the first team this season, lobbed the goalkeeper from about 50 yards in injury-time.
Hull dominated for large spells but did not create many clear-cut chances with Aston Wilson making a couple of good saves.
Georgie Gent, who has been out for more than eight months after injuring his Achilles in March, played at left wing-back and made some important defensive contributions.
Barnsley under 21s are next in action at home to Wigan from 1pm next Tuesday. They have won their last two games and moved up to sixth.
