JONSON Hughes bagged himself some prize money as he crossed the line third at the Cardiff cross country challenge.
It was the Darfield youngster’s first race of the season and he impressed in the under 20 category.
This weekend he will be heading to Liverpool in the hope of securing a slot for the forthcoming European race.
Penistone Footpath Runners members were busy at the Penistone Showground.
The wet weather made conditions difficult but there was still a good turnout.
Home club Penistone fielded 17 athletes across the age groups.
In the junior events, Edward Holley impressed with a solid 10th place in the under-15 boys, while Flynn Rodgers continued his good form, finishing 11th in the under-17 men’s race.
The senior women delivered one of the club’s performances of the day, securing a superb top two finish in the ladies over55 category with Nichola McNally first in 29-17 and Julia Johnson second in 31-35, backed up by Rebecca Timms (33-45), Lesley Parker (34-15), Helen Turner (35-35) and Kim Rodgers (48-46).
The senior men also produced a committed display.
George Parr led the team home in 39-36, followed by Oliver France (43-04), Ian Neville (43-05), Lee Storey (43-51), Oliver Pike (44-48), Andrew Sherbourne (46-40) and Mark Law (47-06).
In the veteran categories, Martyn Goodwin placed an excellent fifth in the male over65 race with 33-37, while Nick Whittingham finished fourth in the male over70 race in 43-05.
A total of 24 Barnsley AC members also headed to Penistone.
Senior woman Ruby Sunman placed fourth in 26.05 to keep her in contention for a podium finish overall with the last fixture in December at Graves Park.
Barnsley Harriers had nine competing with Katie Roberts finishing first for the ladies and Paul Johnson for the men.
There was a new PB for Deborah Carrington.
Harriers Vikki and John Skipper were at the Alton Towers Half Marathon. Vikki was second LV65 and recorded a new LV65 club record.
Penistone’s Bill Phillips continued his return to form at the Derby 10 Mile, running 1-28-51 to finish third in the male over70 category, placing 987th overall on the fast, flat course.
At the same race, Barnsley AC’s Ian Copley ran his first 10-mile race since 2022. He finished two minutes quicker in a time of 1.26.19.
Barnsley AC’s Gail Colville finished second Female at the XVII Carrera Desierto de Tabernas.
The 10k route had 172m elevation and was mostly on sandy and dirt tracks. Gail’s time was 46.50.
Barnsley AC held their annual presentation evening bringing together the track junior section and the senior road runners to celebrate the achievements over the season.
Trophies were handed out to the club groups’ competition winners, parkrun championship winner (Laura Mills) and individual age category winners over each road running distance from 5k up to a full marathon.
On the track side junior members received medals for participating in the under11/13 track league, YADAL or YDL events.
There were trophies for outstanding achievement (Emily Richardson, Amelie Spicer, Poppy Kaye, Riley Hall) and coach’s c hoice (Casey-May Ryder, Mila Woodcock, Hollie Richardson, Nicole Richardson, Mia-Rose Spicer, Isla Taylor).
Saturday saw a reduced parkrun programme, with Penistone parkrun cancelled due to a waterlogged field.
At Barnsley there was another excellent turnout, while across the region three significant milestones were reached: Jane Lawcock completed her 250th parkrun at East Holmes Field, John Broom completed his 650th at Barnsley and Sara Wolstenholme celebrated her 100th parkrun, also at Barnsley, with a personal best.
There were further high placings, including second place for Rob Lees at Woodlands and third places for Dawn Broom and Ashley Firth at Barnsley, as well as Flynn Rogers taking third at Thames Path.
The top age-graded performances were Ian Neville (78.59%), Rob Lees (77.48%), Jill Scrivens (76.08%), Dawn Broom (75.63%) and Keith Gordon (74.45%). In total, 54 seniors ran across 18 venues.
