A VIGIL was held at Locke Park tower recently in commemoration of the worst asylum seeker tragedy in the English Channel.

On November 24, 2021, an inflatable dinghy carrying 30 migrants across the English Channel from France to the UK capsized.

A total of 27 bodies were found dead and one survivor was rescued.

The victims had come from Iraqi Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Iran, Somalia and Vietnam.

A vigil was held at Locke Park Tower with tea lights marking each lost person.

A spokesperson for the Barnsley Borough City of Sanctuary (BBCoS), who hosted the event alongside Barnsley Stand Up To Racism, said: “BBCoS is a group providing support to asylum seekers and refugees in Barnsley and trying to bring together the different communities that make up our town.

“A recent ‘Celebrating our Communities’ event brought together large numbers and demonstrated how the vast majority in Barnsley want to live in harmony.

“If anyone wants to come to our monthly meetings send an email to info@barnsley.cityofsanctuary.org.”
