A disabled boy who lost his dad to brain cancer carried an Olympic torch up the town hall clock tower in his memory.

Jack Wilson, eight, kicked off a 99-lap, four-hour relay between University Campus Barnsley and the tower to raise money for Brain Tumour Research. About 100 people were expected to take part.

As well as being autistic, he suffers from mobility problems due to joint hypermobility syndrome - meaning all his joints are double-jointed - and hypotonia, or low muscle tone and requires regular medication to control chronic pain.

Nonetheless, he said he had a fun time taking part in the relay and said his dad would be proud of him.

The event was organised by mum Suzanne, 32, of Limes Way, Gawber, and the soon-to-be-launched Music and Radio Society (MARS) radio station which she is heading.

Husband Daniel Wilson, 36, died last year after a four-year battle with skin cancer which ultimately spread to his brain.

The torch itself belonged to Brain Tumour Research fundraiser Ian Meek, from Leeds, who died of the disease last week, three years after being diagnosed.
