THE owner of a popular Birdwell garden shop and much-loved Barnsley man has died.
Dennis Machon, died on December 9 aged 82.
He traded on various markets including Barnsley, Hoyland, Doncaster and Penistone selling plants, and fruit and veg before eventually setting up Dennis’ Market Garden at Birdwell in 1982.
That was the place he spent most days, come rain or shine, and welcomed anyone who visited.
Friend Sharon Barnbrook said: “Dennis loved Barnsley people and they loved him.
“Everyone came not just to shop but to chat, share their problems and seek his genuine advice.
“He loved a cup of tea and pork pie or sausage roll.
“He worked everyday rain or shine and could be found in his green house or sat on his old sofa outside with his partner Joan Claassen who worked by his side and who was his best friend.
“He would not retire despite his health, he loved his trade and the place.
“Dennis gave my husband Scott his first weekend job at the age of 14, 42 years ago and was like a father figure as he encouraged and advised him through the years.
“As a family we have remained close to Dennis ever since.
“He was a very special man who will be greatly missed but remembered forever by his loved ones and community.
“There will never be another Dennis Machon - he is one of a kind.”
Dennis’ funeral is set to take place on Tuesday at Kilnhurst Church at 11am.
