A LIFELONG churchgoer will become a centenarian.
Marjorie Micklethwaite will turn 100 years old on Sunday - when there will be a special songs of praise service, including her favourite hymns, at Buckley Methodist Church.
The Pogmoor resident was brought up with two siblings on Buckley Street.
As a lifelong church member, Marjorie attended the Sunday school herself - before teaching it.
Leaving Longcar Central School age 15, Marjorie trained to become a hairdresser, eventually proudly owning a salon on Royal Street.
One of Marjorie’s greatest achievements has been her family, after marrying her husband, Vincent - who worked for the council in the borough engineers department.
Her daughter, Susan Stokes, explained how her family and positive attitude have unlocked a long and fulfilling life.
“Her priorities are her family and faith,” she said.
“She’s steadfast, kind, hard working and a constant presence.”
Sadly, Vincent passed away six years ago, after nearly 70 years of marriage - leaving his legacy to his four daughters, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Marjorie lives with dementia, but is still able to hold a conversation and has a good mental capacity.
Over the years she has become a church stalwart, acting as chief steward and the Sunday School Superintendent for the Circuit.
Marjorie was a keen supporter of the church’s groups, including being a regular speaker at the ladies’ groups - going out of her way to support the Baptist Church’s luncheon club for over 40 years, stopped only by the pandemic.
Coun David Leech, the Mayor of Barnsley will attend a party hosted for friends and family - with the family celebrating the milestone on Sunday at the Rigby Suite.
