AN out-of-sight pit wheel is set to be moved to the heart of the community thanks to a £25,000 funding package.

The Grimethorpe pit wheel is currently situated outside Milefield Primary School but is rarely seen by those who do not go to the school.

But it’s now been revealed it will be moved to Millennium Park - the heart of the village - thanks to some new funding.

A whole host of works - including a commemorative bench and the regeneration of the obelisk in the park - are also set to take place.

Coun Ashley Peace, who represents the North East ward, said: “We are immensely proud to announce the re-siting of one of our community’s pithead winding wheels, returning this powerful symbol of our village’s mining heritage to the very heart of the community, where it belongs and where it can be seen, shared, and appreciated by all.

“The pit wheel represents far more than our industrial past, it tells the story of the generations of miners and families whose hard work, sacrifice, and resilience shaped who we are today.

“By placing the wheel back at the centre of village life, we are ensuring that this history is not hidden away, but proudly displayed as a lasting reminder of our shared identity and roots.

“Our community’s mining heritage is something to be celebrated, protected, and passed on, and this work stands as a testament to the pride and respect we feel in where we come from.

“It is our hope that the pit wheel and regenerated obelisk will continue to inspire reflection, connection, and community spirit for generations to come.”

Work is due to start next month.
