WORK to stop flooding in an area of Wombwell is well underway, much to the delight of a local councillor.

There has been a long-running issue with two major incidents of surface water flooding affecting properties on Cemetery Road - in July 2023 and October 2025.

Wombwell councillors have been pushing Yorkshire Water to investigate the mains sewer which seemingly cannot cope with heavy downpours.

Last month, ditching works were conducted at the brook on Littlefield Lane to alleviate pressure but that is just managing the systems.

Coun James Higginbottom, who represents the Wombwell ward and is also the council spokesperson for environment and highways, said the long-term solution is for Yorkshire Water to sort out the sewer system.

He told the Chronicle: “I am pleased to confirm that Yorkshire Water have carried out a number of CCTV surveys of the mains sewer on Cemetery Road.

“There are further investigation works to be carried out but this is a step in the right direction and something we have been pushing for since the flooding back in October 2025.

“Barnsley Council have carried out a number of measures to alleviate this issue, including clearance of the gullies and ditching works at Littlefield Lane to address capacity issues across the system, but we need a long-term solution to this problem.

“I hope that through working collaboratively with Yorkshire Water, these investigations will give us the evidence base needed to provide a long-term solution for those residents badly affected by surface water flooding.”
