BARNSLEY runners enjoyed success at the popular Brass Monkey Half Marathon in York.

Five Penistone Footpath Runners took part. Alan Nutton broke the 80-minute barrier and led Penistone home in a chip time of 1-19-05 to finish 192nd overall, while first woman back for the club was Jade Crosby in 1-27-44 to finish as 46th woman. Also competing were Gareth Irvine (1-28-01), Gemma Nutton (1-50-14) and Amelia Cottam (1-56-58), with Irvine having completed the Valencia Marathon just over a month prior.

The race provided PBs for seven Barnsley AC members. First back in 17th place was Morgan Thompson in a PB of 1-09-24. Following him with PBs were Wayne Singleton (1-12-49), Ashley Abrahams (1-15-16) and James Drake (1-20-41). Lee Yoxall took five minutes off his quickest half marathon time with 1-23-25 while the biggest improvement was more than 12 minutes by Lydia Race who finished in 1-24-28. Gemma Thickett was the seventh to PB with 1-32-08.

Barnsley Harrier Jay West achieved another PB, by eight minutes.

Rachel Jardine ran her fastest time in nine years.

The Yorkshire Cross Country Championships were held at Lightwater Valley with two Barnsley AC juniors competing at that level for the first time.

Under 13 boy Archie Bisht finished 25th in 10-29 over 2.8km while under 15 boy Kuba Obst was 38th in 13-55 over 3.6km. In the under 17 women’s event, Penistone’s Graihagh Turner came fifth – one place and 12 seconds ahead of Royston’s Maya Schofield.

Barnsley Harriers Rich Spooner and Si Newton took on five laps of the muddy and hilly course, finishing 50th and 60th in the senior men’s category with times of 37-07 and 38-17 respectively.

George Parr and Phil Hinchliffe represented the Penistone club on the fells, travelling north to Penistone Hill Country Park near Haworth to participate in the Stanbury Splash fell race.

The event covered more than six miles with 1,200 feet of ascent. Parr crossed the line in 16th position with 55-30, with Hinchliffe taking 42nd spot in 1-02-47.

Barnsley AC’s Christopher Ryder ran a time of 47-31 at Newcastle 10k.
