Conor Hourihane was pleased to see two new signings make their Barnsley debuts in the win over Stevenage and hopes Fabio Jalo shines on loan.

Forward Jalo, 20, has been loaned out to League Two Oldham and made his debut on Saturday. He has struggled to make an impact since returning from a long injury.

Hourihane told the Chronicle: “He really needs it. I probably only realised in the Wigan game when I started him how much the injury has affected him. He’s just not quite there and a run of games, being involved in a team in League Two where he can play maybe half an hour here and there and start games, find his rhythm again come back in pre-season and hopefully be the Fabio we all want to see.”

Scott Banks made his debut on the right wing, setting up the third goal.

“Banksy was really, really good. He is an out and out winger and left-footed. When he gets a rhythm, he will be even better.

“Now we’ve got outlet on both sides not just relying on Reyes (Cleary). He was combining with Corey (O’Keeffe). He’s a big threat and a top player, some of his crosses and finish in training, the lads are like: oh ok.’”

Tawanda Chirewa, who signed the previous day, came off the bench late on.

“He’s a really good technical player, number ten or wide. It’s a really positive addition. It was difficult for him coming on for ten minutes after only training the day before. He will help with the wide men in terms of minutes because their workload is high, then the ball is in his court to get more minutes.”
