Barnsley were held to a 2-2 draw at home to second-bottom Northampton Town on Tuesday evening.
The visitors took an early lead but David McGoldrick levelled then substitute Adam Phillips put the Reds in front.
Northampton levelled with 20 minutes left.
Barnsley moved up a place to 14th and increased the gap between them and the relegation zone to six points. They are 11 off the play-offs.
Davis Keillor-Dunn was out having been sold while Luca Connell is unwell. Jono Bland and Vimal Yoganathan came into the 11 in central midfield. Adam Phillips was back on the bench but Tom Bradshaw signed too late to make the squad. McGoldrick was captain.
The visitors took the led in the third minute when, after Reyes Cleary lost the ball deep in his left on the left wing, Jack Vale played in ex-Red Cameron McGeehan whose close-range shot was fumbled by Owen Goodman and tapped in on the line by Nesta Guiness-Walker.
Jack Shepherd was then booked for what looked like an elbow on a visiting player. But the hosts were on top for the remainder of the half.
Patrick Kelly saw a long-range shot easily saved then Yoganathan touched over a Scott Banks cross. McGoldrick whipped the ball across the face of goal but no one could turn it in then, minutes later, Patrick Kelly shot over from just inside the box after a good run.
After half an hour, Banks’ wicked free-kick from the left was touched home by McGoldrick for his fifth goal in four games.
Banks curled wide from the right of the box then, after a fine pass by Bland, Cleary cut in from the left and saw a shot saved by the goalkeeper at his near post.
McGeehan almost put the visitors back in front against the run of play when, after fine work by Vale, he was put clean through but shot just wide of the bottom left corner from the edge of the box.
Yoganathan should have made it 2-1 to the hosts when, after robbing Max Dyche of the ball and going clean through with McGoldrick next to him, he shot wide.
In the second half, Yoganathan headed off-target twice from Cleary crosses.
Phillips came on for Yoganathan and scored with his first touch, tapping in a few yards out from McGoldrick’s deflected shot.
Eoghan O’Connell blocked a shot in his box after both Kelly and Shepherd lost the ball just outside their box.
Northampton levelled when Joe Wormleighton's cross was headed down by Kamarai Swyer and Dyche nodded in amid slack defending.
Corey O’Keeffe appealed for a foul in the box late on but the referee did not give a penalty. Kelly also appealed for one in injury-time.
