AN aspiring world champion teenage martial artist has received a glowing Young Champions nomination.
Jake Li is light on his feet but that doesn’t stop him from packing a punch.
The 14-year-old trains at the Barnsley Karate Centre, on Shaw Lane, where he has been taught by John Tumman and his team of coaches since he was just six years old.
Jake’s young age never held him back from a challenge, with the youngster earning his back belt in 2022, after four years of dedication.
Jake has chosen to primarily compete in ‘Kata’.
This is a complex and technically demanding sequence of movements simulating defence against multiple attackers.
His hard work paid off when Jake started bringing home titles and trophies.
At age 12, he bagged a place in England’s regional training sessions, where he has been backed by his team and supportive parents.
Over the last two years, Jake has taken home national and international junior titles, including the British International Individual title.
His successes earned him a place on the England national team.
During the selection process for the WKF Junior European Karate Championships Jake secured his spot to compete in the event taking place today, in Cyprus.
In a display of Barnsley’s community spirit, Jake’s family, friends and club support him in raising over £1,000 in just two weeks.
Jake wrote letters of thanks to every donor, reflecting his gratitude and humility.
Jake’s coach and the owner of Barnsley Karate Centre, John Tumman, said: “Jake’s long-term aspiration held since he was very young is to one day become a world champion.
“Over the years, Jake has benefited from excellent coaching from our club team as well as regional and national instructors.
“Jake embodies the true spirit of a young champion.
“His dedication, resilience, humility and passion for karate have taken him from a determined six year old beginner to an athlete representing England on the European stage.”
