A SEVEN-vehicle collision on the M1 has closed the southbound carriageway between junction 36 and junction 35, police have said.
A spokeswoman for the force said it was too early to say if there had been and severe casualties or fatalities but said there is significant travel disruption on the M1, Stocksbridge bypass, junction 37 at Dodworth and junction 36 at Birdwell.
Four fire engines attended the scene to assist two motorists trapped in their cars, and the engines left at about 11am after fire-fighters cut the roofs off the cars to free passengers.
The southbound carriageway is expected to remain closed until debris from the collision is removed.
A diversion is in place.
