Conor Hourihane praised his Barnsley team’s character after they came from behind to win 2-1 at home to Peterborough on Tuesday.
The Reds fell behind early on but scored either side of the break.
Hourihane told the Chronicle: “We saw the game out really, really well.
“The last couple of games now, we've shown character to come back from two losing positions. I think that needs to be highlighted and seen.
“I think a lot of people obviously highlight when we concede goals or whatever, but there's a lot of character in the team to come back from two losing positions over the last couple of games. And it feels like an important win tonight just to kind of put us on the right track again over the last couple of games.”
On the game overall, Hourihane said: “Obviously I’m very pleased overall to win. I felt the first half was a little bit too open for my liking, constantly transitioning on each other.
“I thought they had a couple of chances to score a couple more and I thought we did as well. Second half, we sorted out a couple of bits in terms of information around how we press and not to be so open in the game and have a little bit more control when we got into the final third.
I thought we had that second half.
"I thought we saw the game out reasonably well, took the ball off them at times and they never really had big moments in the second half compared to their moments in the first half.
“We could have got a couple more ourselves in the second half. I know it was a tight game overall and everyone is hanging on at the very end.
“But I think if we showed that little more quality in the final third in the second half we could have one or two more.”
On his side’s defensive performance, Hourihane said: “I thought we were a little bit better tonight, a little bit more solid.
“I thought Georgie Gent come in and put in a real good 60 minutes performance. He's not played for a while.
“I thought Eoghan O'Connell came into the middle of defence and was assured and calm. And then Corey (O’Keeffe) gives us that energy going forward as well.
“I thought Owen Goodman was really calm and composed and handled the ball really well from a couple of shots that look routine, but you still have to do it. So from that point of view, there was a bit of an improvement tonight, especially in the second half.”
Luca Connell scored from the edge of the box then Cleary won it by finishing off a team move.
“Two really good goals. We speak about it all the time, the goals that we score.
“I think particularly Luca’s goal was probably a little bit more individual. He created an extra yard for himself and then put it in the far corner.
“So that was a really good goal at an important time, we were obviously 1-0 down.
“Whereas for Reyes' goal, that was more of a little bit of a team attacking goal. I think we nicked it up on the right-hand corner and then Corey took someone on and then dinked it to the back stick. I was on about the opposite winger getting in at the back post and touch and finish. But two really good finishes from two really good players.”
Gent played in the league for the first time in almost a year.
“I was delighted for him. I've been thinking about it for the last couple of weeks.
“We've had to be really careful with Georgie. He's had a really difficult Achilles injury.
“Then he came back against Peterborough in the cup a little bit of time ago, got injured in that game. And he was out for a little bit longer than we thought when he got it originally.
“And then we really needed him to get three or four real under 21 games into him to get that fitness in. And he's been knocking on the door over the last couple of weeks.
“I thought it would have been a perfect game for him and I thought he was great.”
Veteran striker David McGoldrick started and put in an impressive shift.
"He's first class. What he gives the team on and off the pitch and what he gives the team on the pitch as well is second to none really.
"Even when he kind of went through a little bit of a spell not in the team, he gives so much in the dressing room and around the building every single day. I know him really, really well and me and him are really close.
"He's giving me everything and it's a real joy to have him in the building every day."
