Penistone Church drew 3-3 at home to Knaresborough Town on Wednesday in the NCEL Premier.

The visitors took the lead but Nathan Keightley levelled with a penalty and James Young scored straight from a corner.

Knaresborough made it 2-2 then, after Robert Ludlam put Church back in front on 89 minutes, the visitors scored again.

That left Penistone tenth, 13 points off the play-offs and ten clear of the relegation zone with six games left.

Coach John Whitehead said: “It’s a good result and a fair result but we’re disappointed with the way it came about. It wasn’t a game that would get extended coverage on Match of the Day.

“We were buoyed by our performance with ten men on Saturday and thought we could take it into this game.

“But we didn’t apply ourselves in the first half. We lacked hunger and desire but managed to go in 2-1 up at half-time.

“They got a fortuitous goal but we scored late on and thought we could get to the 40-point marker and think that we have our roots well and truly in the NCEL Premier for next season. But it was suckerpunch equaliser.

“We’ve lost one in nine now but we’ve conceded 21 in those nine, scoring 17.

“We’ve dropped points from good positions. We’re just not quite where we need to be.”
